Zambia Federation of the Disabled was registered in 1990 under Cap 551 of the laws of Zambia.

ZAFOD General Assembly

Achievements

ZAFOD has since its inception in 1990, scored several achievements some of which include the following:

  • It has been established and recognized as a functional umbrella and representative body of person with disabilities in Zambia.

  • It has played an instrumental role in policy and legal framework formulation on disability issues e.g. Pwds Act No. 33 of 1996.

  • It has increasingly taken centre stage in issues of self- representation by person with disabilities e.g. Constitution Review Commission.

  • It has increased public awareness on disability issues through workshops, seminars, meetings as well as the media.

  • It has provided loans to persons with disabilities which have enabled some of them to earn an income and live an independent lifestyle.

  • Gender sensitivity has improved and the number of women with disabilities participating in developmental activities has increased.

  • Newsletters production

  • Radio awareness programme

  • Participation of persons with disabilities in the ElectoralProccess

  • Awareness Campaign on Gender and Disability

  • Participation in meetings, workshops, events, etc (e.g. IDDP )

  • Dissemination a and Campaign for enforcement of the persons with disabilities Act No.33 of 1996

  • Advocacy for legislation that protects the rights of Persons with Disabilities and improve their welfare e.g. an Inclusive Constitution

  • General influence and advocacy on disability rights through Press Statements/Releases, Meetings etc.

  • Training in Small Scale Business Management

  • Provision of small loans to person with disabilities, as individuals and in groups, to run small scale business enterprises

  • The Membership Development Programmes aimed at improving leadership and management in ZAFOD and its member associations
  • Computer and Secretariat Skills Training for persons with Disabilities in Zambia
  • Assisting member association in planning and executing programmes aimed at benefiting persons with Disabilities
Other activities
  • Promoting cooperation between disability associations and other organisations with similar objectives

  • Carrying out and promoting research into the welfare of person with disabilities and publishing such research findings.
